County presents proposed draft regulations for short-term accommodations

Picton, ON – Municipal staff presented proposed draft regulations for short-term accommodations at a special Committee of the Whole meeting held last night in Wellington.

This meeting was for information purposes only, and Council did not make a decision.

“I want to thank the members of the public who attended the meeting and engaged in a respectful discussion about the proposed regulations,” says Robert Quaiff, Mayor, County of Prince Edward. “Based on the questions and comments we received last night, staff will revise the proposed draft regulations before Council formally considers them later this month.”

After extensive public consultation and background research, municipal staff members – with guidance from consultants at WSP Canada Inc. – developed proposed draft amendments to the Official Plan and zoning by-laws. The amendments introduce a new definition for short-term accommodation and outline where it is permitted.

Municipal staff members are also proposing a licensing system for all short-term accommodations. In order to acquire a licence, owners and operators would have to satisfy a broad range of operational requirements that address matters such as safety and nuisance issues, insurance, and parking. An additional intent of the licensing system is to decrease over time the number of short-term accommodations in oversaturated areas.

The agenda and background information from the special Committee of the Whole meeting is posted on the County of Prince Edward website. If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can submit your comments to Paul Walsh, Manager of Planning, via email pwalsh@pecounty.on.ca by Friday, September 14. More information about short-term accommodations is posted on The County’s municipal projects page:  (http://www.thecounty.ca/county-government/municipal-projects/).

Staff will bring forward a report with recommendations for consideration at the Committee of the Whole meeting on September 27, with the potential for Council ratification on October 9.
