Flood preparation open house set for February 19

Picton, ON – An upcoming open house will provide a wealth of information that local residents and businesses can use to help themselves and their neighbours prepare for high water levels this spring.

“We want to be proactive and provide people with information and helpful resources so we can be ready as a community in advance of the water levels rising on Lake Ontario this spring,” Mayor Steve Ferguson says. “If one word is used to describe this event it is ‘preparation.’”

As of February 6, the Lake Ontario water level was 75.13 m, 52 cm above average, and only 12 cm below the record-high for this time of year set in 1952. With higher than normal water levels expected on Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte this spring, the municipality is taking proactive measures to ensure the community understands the risks and the resources they can access in order to respond.

People attending the event on Wednesday, February 19 can expect a variety of information tables set up inside the Highline Hall at the Wellington and District Community Centre beginning at 6 pm. Municipal staff and representatives from several outside agencies will be on hand to share information about flood preparation, including:

• County Customer Service and GIS mapping
• County Fire Prevention
• County Operations / waste disposal
• Quinte Conservation Authority
• Technical Standards and Safety Association (TSSA)
• Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)
• Hastings Prince Edward Public Health
• Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) and the County Finance Department

Keynote speakers include Sarah Delicate from United Shoreline Ontario. The event will be livestreamed on the County’s Facebook page. Updates on the open house will be shared as they become available. Visit the County website or follow the municipality on Facebook and Twitter.
